CHDEV 15 DIVERSITY AND CULTURE IN EARLY CARE AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS (3 Units)
Examination of the development of social identities in diverse societies including theoretical and practical implications of oppression and privilege as
they apply to young children, families, programs, classrooms and teaching. Various classroom strategies will be explored emphasizing culturally and
linguistically responsive teaching and appropriate anti-bias approaches supporting all children in becoming competent members of a diverse society.
Course includes self-examination and reflection on issues related to social identity, stereotypes and bias, social and educational access, media and
schooling.

CHDEV 17A INFANT AND TODDLER PRACTICUM (3 Units)
This course introduces students to infant-toddler development. Applies current research to the care and education of infants and toddlers in group
settings. Examines essential policies, principles and practices that lead to quality care and developmentally appropriate curriculum for children from
birth to 36 months. The “To Be Arranged” hours may include observation of and participation in planning environments and facilitating infant toddler
growth and development.
PREREQUISITES: Child Development 1, 6, and 39. Verification of freedom from tuberculosis. ADVISORIES: Eligibility for English 125 and 126. (A,

CHDEV 19V COOPERATIVE WORK EXPERIENCE, CHILD DEVELOPMENT (1-8 Units)
Students will gain work experience in a childcare, early intervention, special education or educational facility. Students can specialize their work
experience at the level needed to accomplish their educational / career goals. These various levels of work experience include working with infants,
toddlers, preschool, or grades K-12. Students gaining work experience towards the Early Intervention Assistant Certificate are required to complete
their work experience at a facility that includes typically and atypically developing children. Students may enroll for a maximum of 8 units per semester.
Students may earn a total of 16 units in work experience of which only 6 may be in COTR 19G. This course includes a 2-hour orientation at the
beginning of the semester. Note: Repetition of Cooperative Work Experience courses is allowable under Title 5, §55253.

CHDEV 20 OBSERVATION AND ASSESSMENT (3 Units)
This course focuses on the appropriate use of assessment and observation strategies to document development, growth, play and learning to join with
families and professionals in promoting children’s success. Recording strategies, rating systems, portfolios, and multiple assessment tools are explored.
