In addition, you will learn how to communicate through visual means: how to organize and compose your ideas and experiences and visually present them for maximum impact. Class will consist of lectures, critiques, and drawing exercises. You will work with a variety of media and subject matter. In addition to class work, you are required to do outside drawings every week in a sketchbook. The sketchbook will be turned in at mid-term and at finals for evaluation. All classwork, homework and your sketchbook will be turned in two times during the semester for grades. Works must be wrapped or bound in some way to keep it all together. Prerequisites: This is a foundation class. No art background or prerequisites are necessary. Academic Accommodation: If you have a verified need for an academic accommodation or materials in alternate media (i.e. Braille, large print, electronic text, etc.) per the Americans with Disabilities Act (ASA) or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, please contact me as soon as possible. In addition, it is your responsibility to contact the Disable Student Services Office at extension 3332 to request Academic Accommodation. Attendance Policy: Class attendance is mandatory. Students are expected to arrive on time and leave only when the class is dismissed. Any unexcused absences in excess of four for the entire semester will result in a lowered final grade. Three late arrivals to class will equal one unexcused absence. Three early departures from class will equal one unexcused absence. It is the student’s responsibility to get assignments and class materials after an absence. It is Board Policy that students who miss two or more weeks of class meetings before the 9th week of class can be dropped. Personal Electronics Policy: Cell phones, Blackberries, iPods, MP3 players, headphones, and other similar electronic devices will be turned off and stored out of sight during class. Laptop computers with the sound turned off may be used for taking notes. Grading Policy: • 10 points = Sketchbook 1 • 10 points = Sketchbook 2 • 30 points = in-class drawing assignments and exercises • 100 points = 10 finished drawings at 10 points each • 50 points = Final group project You can earn up to 200 points for this class. • A = 200-181 • B = 180-161 • C = 160-141 • D = 140-121 • F = 120-< Requirements: • Class attendance: Your drawing skills will only improve with practice. • Bring all materials to each class. • Maintain a portfolio: date all drawings and keep them in chronological order. • Maintain a sketchbook of drawing you do outside of class time. • Practice safe and responsible handling of materials and supplies. • Attendance at critiques is mandatory. • Active participation in critiques and discussions. • Enthusiasm and effort. PCGN Recommended: Visits to museums and galleries to view original artworks. Extra credit will be given for a 1 page typed gallery report. Extra credit does not replace missed assignments but can make a difference between letter grades. See me for writing guidelines. Safety Information: Some of the materials used in this class may be harmful or fatal with repeated or prolonged overexposure. Care must be taken to avoid misuse. • Fixative is never to be sprayed indoors. Spray it on your drawing outdoors, sparingly, and downwind of you. • Eating in class is not allowed as dust from charcoal, or conte crayons can be transferred to your food by messy hands and can also become airborne. • Read product warnings and follow safe-handling instructions. No toxic solvents or thinners will be used in this class. • Dust yourself, your materials, and your drawings off outside. This will prevent some drawing materials from becoming airborne. • Beware of tripping hazards. Watch for electrical cords and lighting used for drawing set-ups. Do not place anything on electrical cords. Be cautious about objects left on the floor such as backpacks, supply boxes, purses, sketchpads, and coats as they can be a tripping hazard. • Wipe-up spills immediately.
