Topics include arithmetic operations on integers, fractions and decimals, application of order of operations to simplifying arithmetic and algebraic expressions, solving linear equations, graphing linear equations, and applications. It introduces computer hardware and software, including the use of a mouse and a keyboard, as well as an introduction to the windows operating system. Word processing and spreadsheet software will be introduced. Students will access the Internet and perform basic searches. Topics may include the sources and limits of knowledge, the nature of reality, the relationship between mind and body, free will and determinism, the existence of God, and the nature of morally right action. Readings will include selections drawn from the primary texts of Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Descartes, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, or Kant, as well as various twentieth century philosophers.
