These concepts are then employed in the study of our Western musical heritage from the Middle Ages to the present. This course studies the history and development of American jazz styles from the early 20th century to the present. It is an introductory course for the general student and/or non-musician. The course will study the fundamentals of conducting and score reading; standard patterns and baton techniques. It will include practice with recordings and college ensembles. The course is designed for the music major. This course develops fundamental piano skills including theory, terminology, technique, and beginning level repertoire. It is designed for the general student as well as the classroom teacher. ADVISORIES: Eligibility for English 126 and Mathematics 201. This course is the continuation of MUS 20: continued technical development of basic 5-finger patterns to include all major and minor keys; simple chord progressions in all keys; continuation of music-reading skills and music theory study that was begun in MUS 20.
