Clovis Community College – Spring 2018 Class Schedule 108 ENGLISH ENGL 1A READ & COMP (4 Units) Students will read, analyze, and compose college-level prose, with emphasis on the expository study writing as a process explore different composing structures and strategies edit and revise their own writing and conduct research (gather, organize, evaluate, integrate, and document information), culminating in a term research paper and annotated bibliography. Students will write a minimum of 6,000 words in formal academic language. PREREQUISITES: English 125 and 126 or English 130 and English 126 or placement through college assessment process. The course will focus on the development of logical reasoning and analytical and argumentative writing skills based primarily on works of non-fiction in a variety of media. Students will write a minimum of 6,000 words during the course of the semester. PREREQUISITES: English 1A or 1AH. Students will avoid common writing errors, develop their writing skills by reading model essays and analyzing rhetorical strategies, develop critical thinking skills by matching the structures of writing to meaning and audience, and by using writing as thinking to explore and express ideas. This course is a companion to ENGL 126 and prepares students for ENGL 1A. Students must successfully complete written course work to receive credit. PREREQUISITES: English 252 or placement by the college assessment process. Various reading and reporting strategies are developed and improved for different styles of academic writing. Instruction emphasizes reading as a problem-solving process. PREREQUISITES: English 262 or 262B or placement by college assessment process.
